SOME INTERESTING FACTS: Federal Fisheries Minister Loyola Hearn Skips Class and Fails the Test On public television March 15, 2007, Loyola Hearn (Minister of Fisheries & Oceans), stated that 5-1/2 to 6 million harp seals could "have a dramatic effect on the food chain" and that "175 thousand tractor trailers [extending from] New York to Los Angeles and back to Texas" would represent the amount of fish eaten each year by seal herds [NTV: "Animal groups protest across the world"].How odd that the man leading Canadian fisheries is not familiar with facts to be found on his own website. In addition to publicly questioning the rights of children to protest (in recent news), this federal minister has now shown the world that he makes statements without doing his homework.
We need to refer Mr. Hearn back to the DFO's Myth vs. Fact sheets:
http://www.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/seal-phoque/myth_e.htmMyth #4: The Canadian government is allowing sealers to kill thousands of seals to help with the recovery of cod stocks.Reality: Several factors have contributed to the lack of recovery of Atlantic cod stocks, such as fishing effort, poor growth and physical condition of the fish, and environmental changes. In addition, there are many uncertainties in the estimates of the amount of fish consumed by seals. The commercial quota is established on sound conservation principles, not an attempt to assist in the recovery of groundfish stocks.
Better get back to class, Mr. Hearn. Read your own fact sheets before you try to convince the international community that seals are responsible for depletion of fish. You also lose marks for your theatrical attempt to demonize seals. A position with the federal government is not Drama class, and the use of fear-mongering tactics is nothing but an effort to cheat the public out of the truth. MORE BAD NEWS FOR THE SEALS: European Commission turns its back on the seals
With the Canadian Seal 'Hunt' due to
start in a matter of days, the European Commission has said 'no' to banning
the import of seal products into the European Union.
Despite unprecedented support from 425 MEPs, the European Commission has
ruled that it will not implement a ban, but will instead commission a study
into the 'hunt' to gauge whether it is humane or not (even though numerous
other studies and extensive video footage prove the inherent cruelty
involved). This study could take years to complete - in the meantime, many
hundreds of thousands of Harp seal pups will be slaughtered on the ice floes
of Canada's east coast.
Dr Caroline Lucas MEP,
together with other co-sponsor MEPS of the European Parliament, have been
pressing the Commission to implement a ban. Other countries in Europe and
beyond, have already put bans in place, or are expected to do so within the
very near future.
The UK government (through the
UK minister for trade) has stated that it is:
'deeply concerned
about the reported cruelty of the Canadian seal hunt and that the UK will
press the European Commission to put forward an EU-wide ban on harp and
hooded deal products.' Now that no such ban is imminent, the UK
government needs to be lobbied to implement its own ban.
With the UK being the second
largest importer of Canadian seal skins (Denmark being the largest), any ban
would send a very strong message to the Canadian government.
What can you do?
For the seals
